Ratchet and Clank (2016)

Ratchet and Clank (2016), a remake of the 2002 original and a sort of film game as it is related to the poorly received and now largely forgotten film which was also titled simply Ratchet and Clank released in 2016. The remake was indeed delayed into 2016 from 2015 to coincide with the release of the film as well a giving Insomniac Games time to polish the game. Insomniac Games and the team behind the film were in close collaboration in character models and environments were shared between the two.

Ratchet and Clank is a very good looking game and was a good demonstration of the capabilities of the PS4. Alongside being good to look at, Ratchet and Clank also plays very well, with the combat and platforming being very smooth. This is of course helped by the frame rate being very stable, I only noticed frame drops occuring on a couple of occasions, mainly when there were a lot of effects on screen and glitch free. The boss fights were not overally hard, though it did take me few attempts to beat each one, this isn’t Dark Souls after all.

Ratchet and Clank contains all the creativity that Insomniac is known for in their ideas and humour. Being a remake, Ratchet and Clank doesn’t follow the original game to the completely to the letter as there are several story and level differences and changes from the original. I’ve only seen the orignal be played rather than having played it myself, so I can only go on what the ever reliable internet (wikipedia) says are the differences.

While having not really played Ratchet and Clank properly previously the remake has got me interested in playing the previous titles, as the orignal trilogy and the two PSP spin offs are available on the PSN store under PSP classics label. Both the PS2 and PSP games have been re-released with the same type of quality life updates as Resistance Retribution was. So while they might not be up to the more modern standards of the 2016 game, they should still pretty good.

So having finally played Ratchet and Clank and got it off my backlog, as it has been a game that I had been close to finally get around to playing multiple times before, may in fact end up with me adding more games to the already stupidly big backlog, rather than just watching the film at some point. Opps.
